Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90% of cases. It generally manifests itself in adulthood, in people aged 40 and over. Unfortunately, it is also appearing in younger and younger people, partly as a result of rising obesity rates. In at-risk populations, it can even appear as early as childhood.
In type 2 diabetes, two phenomena are generally present:
The result is hyperglycemia, i.e., an increase in blood sugar levels above normal values.
In the long term, hyperglycemia can lead to the development of complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels.
