Dizziness and vertigo are problems that can be very debilitating, leading to a significant decrease in the ability to perform even simple tasks or activities. They can be accompanied by vomiting, vision problems and consequent kinesiphobia (fear of movement). To properly treat all of these symptoms, it is important to conduct a complete evaluation of all systems that may be involved. These potential causes include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), labyrinthitis, Meniere’s disease and other inner ear and central nervous system conditions. Dizziness and vertigo can also be cervicogenic, which is caused by joint stiffness and muscle tension in the craniocervical region, neck and even the jaw.
The physiotherapist is a health professional who has the expertise to properly assess and treat many of the causes of dizziness and vertigo. He or she also knows how to refer to a physician if additional tests are needed to properly manage the person who consults.
It is recommended that you come to your appointment accompanied by someone, as some tests can cause dizziness and make driving more risky.
