The outdoors, its virtues and its risks

Par

It’s a well-known fact that outdoor activities bring enormous benefits to those who practice them. Indeed, taking part in outdoor activities not only improves physical and psychological health, but also brings pleasure. Despite these benefits, however, there are certain risks involved. Big climbs, uneven surfaces, heat, among others, all increase the risk of injury and/or discomfort. What are these problems?

Tendinopathies

As many outdoor activities require repetitive movements, overuse pain such as tendinopathy is common. The tendons most often affected are :

  • Achilles tendon
  • Goose’s foot (pes anserinus)
  • Patellar ligament
  • Iliotibial band

The solution to these injuries is simple, but not always easy to apply. To prevent such injuries, simply increase the difficulty of the task or the volume of training gradually. The body adapts to the stress induced and thus improves its ability to cope with greater stress later on. However, too much stress or a drastic increase in training volume can lead to injuries such as tendinopathy.

Other injuries or inconveniences

In addition to tendinopathy, outdoor athletes are at risk of fractures, periostitis and ligament sprains. As outdoor surfaces are sometimes very uneven, it’s important to be extra careful to avoid injury.

Other things to bear in mind are heatstroke and fatigue. During the hot summer months, it’s very important to be well prepared before any outdoor activity. Hydration is essential (even when you’re having fun in the water!) and it’s vital to protect yourself from the sun. So it’s important to bring :

  • Water
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat or cap
  • Sunglasses

Once you’re well prepared, all that’s left to do is enjoy the outdoors and have fun!
